Both Rainsford and Zaroff are fairly consistent to what we expect of them, although Rainsford proves to be the more inventive and cunning of the two in the end. But since he is the hero of the story, this is no state secret, either!
Characters which do not change throughout the story line are called flat characters; if they represent preconceived ideas of types of people, they are stereotypes. If they represent in an exaggerated way specific aspects of human nature, they are archetypes.
