There are three settings in the novel:  prison, the courtroom, and the protagonist's (16 year old Steve's) life on the streets of Manhattan.  The novel was written in 1999 and it is set in what was then present-day.  Steve's story begins on Monday, July 6 and concludes five monts later in December.

The setting also includes the time period from the past December when the robbery and murder were committed up through the time he's arrested, and his trial begins. Harlem is the part of New York City where Steve lives, and we also get a sense of what his home is like. After the trial, Steve goes home to try and learn how to overcome his view of himself as a monster. The whole novel spans almost a year from the murder in December of the preceding year to December of the present year.
