The novel was written in 1999 and it is set in what was then present-day. Steve's story begins on Monday, July 6 and concludes five monts later in December.

Harlem is the part of New York City where Steve lives, and we also get a sense of what his home is like. After the trial, Steve goes home to try and learn how to overcome his view of himself as a monster. The whole novel spans almost a year from the murder in December of the preceding year to December of the present year.
