This quote comes in Chapter 24, during Aunt Alexandra's tea party. Alexandra and Maudie are in the kitchen, discussing the trial and Atticus. Alexandra is worried about Atticus. She never felt that she should subject the family to the ridicule that came with taking on a controversial case, and she is worried that the case is weighing too heavily on him. Alexandra feels that Atticus is being used.
Maudie disagrees. She says that the highest tribute paid to Atticus is that the town entrusted him with this case. They trusted him, in a situation fraught with hypocrisy and lies, to uphold truth and justice in the best manner possible. Maudie believes that the town has the highest respect for Atticus and, instead of using him, are putting their faith in his leadership.
