Ruth Marguerite Vande Kieft was born September 12, 1925, the daughter of Dutch Calvinists, her father a pastor. Toward the end of her career she bought a home in Silver Spring, Maryland, where she hoped to enjoy retirement with her niece Marjorie; but, stricken with cancer, she moved sooner than expected. There, during my last visit with her, in July 1992, she showed me an album in which she had placed the many cards that she had gratefully received from friends during her illness.
