   As you read on you will notice that James is very arrogant at times.  He is obviously not close to his father and is resentful of the attention which Helen receives from the family.James waits for the family to be seated before announcing Annie's predicament because of this arrogance.  His resentfulness toward Annie is very obvious when he tells everyone that Helen deserves to be in an asylum.  His waiting to tell the family that Annie is locked in her room demonstrates his attitude and thoughts; see I told you so.  No one can help Helen.
