    After moving in with the Kellers, Annie experienced open conflict with Captain Keller, but she was able to forge a better relationship with Kate Keller, Helen's mother. Kate was very protective of Helen, but she was hopeful that Annie could succeed and was interested in knowing why Annie kept spelling letters into Helen's hand. After Annie explained the principle behind how she was trying to teach Helen language, Kate asked Annie to teach her how to spell the letters into Helen's hand, too. Annie does teach Kate the hand language she was using with Helen. Annie had told Kate that it might require spelling a million words before Helen understood, but since Kate could spell for Helen, also, that would only be half-a-million words for each of them.
