The only way Helen can even connect with Martha and Percy as a young child is through the sense of touch, through physical force. She knows they communicate with each other using their mouths in speech, as she shows when she constantly reaches to feel their lips then touches her own, but her inability to share in their communication makes her furious. Percy, being only 5 years old, laughs at her rage, while Martha is alarmed. Both children seem to accept Helen in their play as one of their own who is a little different, and they react to Helen's efforts to touch their faces with childlike annoyance, with Martha shoving her hand away and Percy biting her fingers.
