But, then, while he speaks, Mr. Hooper alludes to secret sin, and the "hearers quaked." At the close of the service, people hurry out and congregate together, whispering. Some return home alone "wrapped in silent meditation; some talked loudly and profaned the Sabbath day." A few people shake their heads in confusion. Others who usually invite Mr. Hooper to their "table" neglect to do this. So, surely, Mr. Hooper is aware of the profound effect his wearing of the veil over his face has upon his congregation.
