Who do you think is more deserving of Hermia's love in A Midsummer Night's Dream?

    That answer depends entirely on whether or not you agree with the Athenian law of spouse selection.  If you agree that the law should be followed, then Demetrius is more deserving because he has been selected by Hermia's father, Egeus.  If you think it's a silly law that could be ignored, then Lysander is more deserving because he has actually won Hermia's affections.  Most students will tend to say that it's a silly law and Hermia is free to choose whoever she wants to choose, but I always challenge students with this question: Don't we have some silly laws in place today that you're still expected to follow?  Once you decide where you stand on that law issue, you'll know who you think deserves Hermia.
