Puck is a sprite, a creature with magical powers, similar to a pixie or an elf. There are different opinions regarding how harmful Puck is. At worst, he's seen as dangerous and scary. At best, he's viewed as mischievous, not meaning to do anything that would cause significant harm or trouble. Puck is connected, however, to the darkness and the things that go bump during the dark hours of the night. He serves a second purpose in the play by interpreting it for us and commenting on the action of the play.

In English folklore, Puck was actually the Devil, and was given the blame for pretty much anything bad that happened to someone. Shakespeare's Puck isn't nearly as evil...He's a fairy who acts as Oberon's (king of the fairies) jester/henchman.

Other folklore has a Puck as a demon or the devil himself. For the purpose of A Midsummer Night's Dream a goblin or elf is the most plausible. I tend to think of him as an elf but either can be fully justified. It all depends on how you picture him in your head or how he is portrayed in performance.
