Theseus, the duke of Athens, was to be married in four days to Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons, and he ordered his Master of the Revels to prepare suitable entertainment for the nuptials. Other lovers of ancient Athens, however, were not so happy as their ruler. Hermia, in love with Lysander, was loved also by Demetrius, who had her father’s permission to marry her.
