A Midsummer Night’s Dream, like many of Shakespeare’s plays, contains numerous references to mythology. For example, A Midsummer Night’s Dream takes place in the city of Athens, the mythological home of the characters Theseus and Hippolyta. Shakespeare also uses ideas and characters from mythology, such as Diana’s alter, Cupid, Phibbus (meaning “Phoebus,” the sun god), and Erecules (meaning “Hercules,” the god of strength and valor). There are also, of course, many references to fairies and the fairy kingdom.
