    I assume you are referring to the book by Eugenides?

    Middlesex is the name of the road in Grosse Point that the family moves to following the race riots in Detroit.  In addition, in the context of the book, it also refers to the fact that Cal/Callie is both male and female (hence being middlesexed.)
