A Note on Transliteration: We have researched and prefer the following spellings for a number of commonly used Arabic and Hebrew terms. Due to widespread differences over the translation of such words into English, however, it is not necessarily incorrect to use alternative spellings. We have preferred Abdullah over Abdallah (for the king of Jordan); Baath over Ba'ath; Haganah over Hagana; Hezbollah over Hizbollah; Muhammad over Mohammed; Pan-Arab over pan-Arab; Shiite over Shi'ite; and Transjordan over Trans-Jordan.
