    According to the "Product Details" provided by Amazon.com, the book is appropriate for ages 9-12. Amazon links it with   The Hawk that Dare Not Huntby Day by Scott O’Dell,  Son of Charlemagne by Barbara Willard, and Black Arrowby Robert Louis Stevenson (among others) for reading level and interest. Enotes says it "celebrates boyhood" and offers a "fast-paced narrative," suggesting that reading level sounds appropriate.  Enotes offers an excellent discussion of all aspects of the novel.
