Angelo was not wholly a villain in this play. While it is true that he is cold and unyielding, most especially in the beginning, he seems to be doing this out of a sense of right and wrong. He is very "precise" in upholding the law. His human emotional side comes out when he feels emotion for Isabella, and this confuses him greatly, “what art thou Angelo . . .Ever till now, / When men were fond, I smiled and wondered how” (lines 173, 186-187). He does developed an almost rabid sense of lust, and this leads to him almost forcing himself upon her. He is not a villain, he exhibits weaknesses and poor judgements, and this is human.

Angelo is a dirty old man... a Jeffrey Archer of his day! Is Jeffery Archer human... I suppose he is!
