    when Susan was dying, she wrote telling Henchard that Elizabeth Jane was not his daughter in a letter.

    Susan dies and Henchard tells Elizebeth Jane he is her father

    when Henchard had told Elizebeth Jane that he was her father he went looking for evidence to prove it. this is when he came across they letter.

    He was not ment to open it till Elizebeth Janes wedding day but did any way...

    that is how he found out
