As Susan and Elizabeth-Jane arrive in Casterbridge, a crowd is gathered in front of a hotel where a fancy dinner is being held. The windows have been opened so that the commoners on the street can hear what is being said at the dinner. Susan and Elizabeth-Jane learn that Michael Henchard is the mayor of the town and is seated at the head of the table. He is also said to be a widower.
