Maud Martha Brown Phillips, the protagonist. She is the daughter of Belva and Abraham Brown, reared with her older sister Helen and brother Harry in Cottage Grove, a neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. She is first seen at the age of seven. Maud perceives herself as ordinary and not beautiful, with her dark coloring and nappy hair. She desires to be cherished and dreams of an exciting life in New York City.
