You spend 1/5 of the money on popcorn, $2 on candy, and $3 on a soda. If you have $1 left, how much money did you have to begin with?

    x - (y+$2+$3) = $1

    x - y - $5 = $1

    x - y -$5 + $5 = $1 + $5

    x - y = $6

    y = 1/5x

    x - (1/5x) = $6

    (4/5)x = $6

    (4/5)x * 5 = $6 * 5

    4x = $30

    4x / 4 = $30 / 4

    x = $7.5

    X = the total amount of dollars you have

    then, X = (1/5) X + 2 + 3 + 1

         X - (1/5) X = 6

         (4/5) X = 6

            X = 6 * 5/4 = 7.5
