Posted by kjcdb8er on Tuesday September 22, 2009 at 8:58 AMThere are 365 days in a year. A person drinks a soft dring on 182.5 of those days. So each person contributes 182.5*(1/16) lbs of aluminum to the total, or 11.4 lbs.
Therefore, 270 million Americans create 11.4*270 million = 3080 million lbs of aluminum each year.
3080 million lbs * (1 ton / 2000 lbs) = 1.54 million anual tons of aluminum to be recycled.

Posted by krishna-agrawala on Tuesday September 22, 2009 at 9:00 AMWe assume there are 365 day in a year.
Therefore total number of cans of sot drinks consumed by 270 million Americans in one year which needs to be recycled:
= (Population)*(Number of days in a year/2) = 270,000,000*365/2
Weight to one cans in pounds is 1/16
Assuming one ton = 2000 pounds the weight of one can in tons = (1/16)/2000 = 1/32000
Therefore weight of 270,000,000*265/2 cans = (270,000,000*365/2)*(1/32000) = (270,000*365)/64 = 1539843.75
Answer: 1539843.75tons of aluminum needs to be recycled every year.

Posted by neela on Tuesday September 22, 2009 at 9:23 AMAt the rate of a soft drink per two days per head the number of soft drink units required for 270 millions a day = 270*10^6/2 = 135*10^6 units.
At the rate of 1/16 pound per unit , the total aluminium per day = 135*10^6)(1/16) pounds=8437500 pounds =8437500/2000 tons4218.75 tons
Therefore, the aluminium required for 365 days or a year=4218.75*365=1539843.75 tons, which is therequired recycling quantity.
