$140 is to be shared in 5:2 ratio.

    Solution:

5:2 implies first make the $140 into  5+2 = 7 equal shares and 5 of them  for you and 2 of them for  me. O.K ?

I am  now making  $140 into 7 equal shares :

$140 divided into 7 equals as below.

    $140/7 =$20.

    For you 5 equal shares of $20 = $20*5 = $100

    For me 2 equal shares of $20 = $20*2 = $40

Check: Let us once again count our money  now:

Your share $100 and my share $40. Put together , the total is $140, the very same original amount  that was before we shared. We did not miss anything. Our shares are checked!

Thanks for the problem. We meet next at a similar occasion  through the Enotes like this.

    Is it OK?

If $140 is to be shared into ratio 5:2, therefore, we'll add 5 and 2(5+2)=7.

Then, the resu;lt will be used to divide $140($140/7)=$20. Having done that, the result which is $20, will be used to multiply each of the values in the ratio (5*$20=$100, 2*$20= $40). After all said and done, $140 has been shared between the two values giving the answers to be ($100 & $40)

    total amount = 140 dollars

    given ratio =5:2

sharing means to evaluate value of one unit for which we divide the total amount to the given sum of ratios

    ie. 140/(5+2)

140/7=20 for one unit of ratio

for 5 unit ratio it comes 5*20 =100

and for 2 units it comes 2*20 =40

So, the solution is share of 5:2 is 100:40  whose sum is 140 which confirms the solution.
