Answers:

  1. As autumn turns into winter, Jiro is doing well as an apprentice puppeteer.  He is a favorite of Kinshi, the senior boy, and he is memorizing the plays thanks to the scripts that Kinshi steals so he can study.  His only worry is that his father has not come, and Jiro arranges to take a few hours off to make sure everything is alright at home.  Jiro finds his house locked and shuttered tight, and a neighbor boy explains that his parents have gone to a cousin's place in Kyoto because of his father's illness.

Back at the theater, Kinshi gets the difficult job of operating one of the main puppet's feet because the man who usually does it is sick.  Kinshi does well, and steals a jug of sake, or rice wine, so the boys can celebrate his triumph.  He is caught, and beaten by Yoshida.

Since Okada's next play is not yet written, Yoshida choses to do a familiar favorite, which everyone knows except Jiro.  Kinshi offers to steal a script for him, but Jiro, frightened that Kinshi will get in trouble again, demurs.  Jiro decides to sneak into the alcove to steal a script himself.  While he is there, he comes across an interesting and incongruous discovery - a basket hat worn only by elite Komuso priests.
