Master and Margarita | Characters

Although there is danger in searching a writer's biography too carefully for literary prototypes, there are certain correspondences between historical figures and some of the characters in The Master and Margarita which may serve to illuminate Bulgakov's biography, if not necessarily his literary work. While many of the events and characteristics connected with the Master are clearly reminiscent of Bulgakov himself, Margarita is in large part a portrait of Elena Shilovskaya, whom Bulgakov met in 1929, and who in 1932 became his third wife.
