I'm not certain if I completely understand your question, but the reference to "the integrity" of the story makes me think of Poe's theory of short story writing. Poe believed that everything in a short story should work together to create a single emotional effect in the reader. In Poe's work, this emotional effect frequently was one of horror. In this regard, the integrity of "The Masque of the Red Death" is this: All the elements in the story, from the opening paragraph until the story's conclusion, weave a tale of horror that only intensifies as it develops. Blood is the motif that appears throughout the story and acts to unify it, as well.
