The German cabinet and instrument maker Heinrieh Engelhard Steinweg (1797-1871)—who built his first piano in his kitchen—and his wife and eight children, seeking a more favorable manufacturing environment, emigrated to New York City from Seesen in 1851 and Americanized their name to Steinway.
