Overview
Founded in 1927, the Southland Corporation, based in Dallas, helped to pioneer the convenience store concept by selling food staples like bread and milk at its retail ice stores. It first dubbed its shops 7-Eleven to advertise their business hours, from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The name stuck, even when the stores began staying open 24 hours a day and offering as many as 3,000 products.
