The Story:
Act I. Ramsden and Octavius discussed Ann, whom Octavius
wanted to marry, and John Tanner, Octavius’ friend and the
author of The Revolutionist’s Handbook. Tanner
entered, protesting that he and Ramsden had been named Ann’s
guardians in her father’s will. Ramsden did not wish to serve
with Tanner and Tanner did not wish to serve at all, but Ann,
entering with her mother, refused to dispense with either guardian.
Tanner stated that Ann would do what she liked in any case. When
