The Story:
Richard Rich, eager to find employment at court, came to the manor of his acquaintance, Sir Thomas More, to request aid. When Sir Thomas warned Rich of the bribes and other temptations of court, and offered to help Rich find a position as a teacher, Rich was deeply disappointed. More gave Rich a silver cup that had been sent to More as an attempted bribe. As they were talking, the Duke of Norfolk entered with Lady Alice and Lady Margaret More, and the Duke surprised the gathering by announcing that Thomas Cromwell had become secretary to Cardinal Wolsey.
