Forty-three percent of all first marriages in the United States end in divorce. Many of these unsuccessful marriages are known as “starter marriages,” pairings between men and women in their twenties or thirties that last fewer than five years and do not result in children. With modern marriages seeming so impermanent, many people have begun to wonder if the way men and women form relationships in today’s world is ineffective.
