In the following viewpoint Jonah Goldberg criticizes Wendy Shalit’s book A Return to Modesty: Discovering the Lost Virtue. He contends that Shalit advocates old-fashioned customs, such as arranged marriages and calling cards, because they preserved a woman’s modesty and contributed to respectful relations between men and women. In Goldberg’s opinion, Shalit’s arguments are flawed because due to many of the antiquated customs she endorses, women were owned and controlled by men.
