Magic Realism Group
Question:
When I teach magical realism, I would like to use art to teach the elements of the form better, and as creative writing prompts. Ideas?
I've got at least one de Chirico image and was going to look up Henri Rousseau. Others? I'm worried about using too much surrealism b/c it loses that realistic edge that makes the writing magical realism.

Then you could present a few basic questions that they must answer through essay form. After reading what their responses are, you could then have them create their own piece of magical realism. Their creation could be a painting, poems, a story, a sculpture, or even perhaps music or a play they act out with the help of classmates. Then hold a discussion concerning the effectiveness of the projects. By then the students are more versed in the subject and can determine what is magical realism and what is not and why.
