Flaubert often illustrates Emma’s character and situation through a juxtaposition of scenes in the novel. Most of these instances involve Emma’s mingling of past memories with present reality. One occurs when Emma is at the ball. As she looks out the windows and observes the servants on the lawn, separated from the evening’s glamour and festivities, she envisions herself “as she had been once” on her father’s farm.
