As the play opens, Scotland is being attacked by forces under the direction of the King of Norway. Joining in the attack are some Scottish rebels, including Macdonwald and the Thane of Cawdor. Scotland is defended from invasion, and King Duncan's power is preserved. This military invasion isn't given a specific name in the play. Macbeth's bravery in fighting for the King is extraordinary; ironically, Duncan's strongest defender becomes his murderer as the play develops.
