Macbeth and Banquo are both Scottish Generals in the King's army.  Macbeth is recognized by the king for his acts of courage and is rewarded with another noble title, Thane of Cawdor, by King Duncan.

When Macbeth and Banquo encounter the witches, each receive a prophecy.  Macbeth, however, decides that he will fulfill the prediction made to him by committing regicide (killing the king). Although Banquo receives a prediction that his heirs will sit upon the throne of Scotland, he does nothing with the information.

Finally, although Macbeth and Banquo are friends, when Macbeth decides that his friend might pose a threat to his continued reign as king, he has him murdered.
