Although Macbeth tells the servant to ask Lady Macbeth to ring the bell when his drink is ready, the ringing of the bell signals that she has drugged the grooms guarding Duncan and laid their daggers where Macbeth can see them. The bell is a pre-arranged signal. It is now time for Macbeth to proceed with the murder of the king.

Macbeth says, "Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell/That summons thee to heaven or to hell" (2.1.76-77). Reluctantly, Macbeth goes to complete the task.
