    Although Macbeth's great crimes are not generally known in Scotland, many have come to believe that he, not Duncan's sons, is responsible for the King's murder. Opposition to Macbeth has grown as Scotland continues to suffer under his tyranny. Malcom has been given refuge by King Edward in England, and Macduff has gone to England to secure the force of King Edward's army under the Earl of Northumberland and his son Siward in overthrowing Macbeth. Lennox prays that with divine intervention, "a swift blessing" may return to Scotland which now suffers "[u]nder a hand accursed!"
