    Macbeth begins (and mostly takes place) in medieval Scotland, which is north of England. The opening scene is open land not far from a battlefield where the last battle of a civil war had just been fought. Over the course of the bloody play, Macbeth must deal with the effects of killing to become King of Scotland.

    The link below is a great site that shows on a map of Scotland where all the events in Macbeth occurred. These events are grounded in real history, although Shakespeare made a few changes to fit the dramatic needs of the play.
