Lady Macduff is angry that her husband left for England-and did not tell her. She and her son are alone, and she is frightened. A messenger arrives to report that she and her son are in danger. Murderers arrive, and both Lady Macduff and her son are killed.

It might also be important to note that Lady Macduff and her son were slaughtered on the orders of Macbeth. He is further showing his descent into the dark side of his character as he tries to ensure retention of the thrown. Macduff is out of town trying to come up with support for his assertion that Macbeth needs to be overthrown.
