The witches play a complex and varied role in this tragedy. A common debate has been if they caused Macbeth's fate, if they simply could see the future, or if their predictions caused Macbeth to act in ways that led him to act to cause his own fate. (I favor the last position. It's really that complicated!) They show up only a few times in the play, and are markedly unnatural. Their language shows how different they are from normal people. Each time they appear, it's a pivotal point in the plot.
