What's a good thesis, if writing an essay on Macbeth?
There are, of course, many good potential theses statements about the play Macbeth. You should first decide the topic that interests you. Here are some possible topics (Please note that these are meant only as suggestions!):
- Is it the supernatural -- the Witches and spells and incantations -- that you would like to investigate and write about?
- Would you prefer to write about Macbeth and whether he is motivated by his overriding ambition, a tragic flaw that leads to his downfall?
- How about Lady Macbeth? Would you like to write about her role in Macbeth's actions and how her desire for power affects her actions?
Once you have decided your topic of interest, you should then create a statement about the play that you intend to "prove" with examples of action and quotes from the play. For example, for an essay about Macbeth and his ambition, I might create this thesis statement: Macbeth, as the tragic hero of the play, is driven to his own demise by his tragic flaw -- ambition.
