Students Speak Out On Overall Experience

“Macalester is right for me in many ways, mainly regarding academics. With small, intimate classes that carefully balance lecture and discussion, accessible and friendly professors, and a challenging (yet not backbreaking) workload, I am able to maintain a healthy equilibrium between studying and learning outside of the book. At times, I tire of the social scene because it is composed of such a small number of people, but this is an inevitable result of the small size of the school. The school is not as near cosmopolitan city-life as it may seem. St. Paul is a sleepy city, and Minneapolis is a 30-minute bus ride away. Having a car at this school would radically alter my Macalester experience, and I think I would enjoy it more. Many people besides me similarly feel trapped at times on this somewhat claustrophobic campus. But if you make the effort, there are tons of resources available within the Twin Cities and you can make the best of the situation. I don't believe in regretting things when it's too late to change them. I'm glad I came to Macalester.”

“I do not have another place I would prefer to go. Overall, however, the college experience does not meet my expectations, though I fear I just have high expectations. I will continue to return to Macalester to spend time with exceptionally energetic and gifted students, to make lasting connections with faculty and staff, and to make use of a range of resources that are openly available to me. What I don't expect to find is a sense of overall vision, a coordination of curriculum and programming that is consistent with the over-promoted and under-developed set of values the college aspires to.”
