    Rachel is the younger sister of the protagonist Lyddie. To begin with Lyddie's mother leaves the home taking with her Rachel and her younger sister Agnes. Lyddie and her brother  Charles are left alone on the family farm.

    Later Lyddie travels to Lowell and finds work in a textile powerloom factory.  One day her uncle arrives there with Rachel and leaves  her under her care, because their mother has become insane and has been admitted in a lunatic asylum.

    Rachel  joins Lyddie in the textile factory as a "doffer." Soon, Rachel falls ill. Their brother Charles arrives and wishes to take Rachel alongwith him as his kind employers have agreed to adopt both of them. Lyddie does'nt want Rachel to go, but she finally agrees because she knows that she will be looked after better by Charles.
