I attribute this fact to the knowledge that Susie is unable or unprepared to view the "big picture" of life until the end of the book. Until that time, she is unwilling or unready to focus on the extent to which her life (and death) has truly affected others or to place the wellness of those she cares about before her own happiness, choosing instead to concentrate on her own emotions and desires.
I believe that Susie's inability to acknowledge the fact that she is not the center of everything, or that her existence on earth was not the matter that was the most importance, would have made it impossible for her to be aware of God or a Supreme Being. However, I do feel that her eventual awareness of her role in life might have caused her to become aware of that larger being.
