I wouldn't be inclined to change the setting.  It's very well done as is...in this age where young girls are in danger of disappearing at the hands of psycho-sexual predators, it is very relevant and moving.  I love the point of view and the language of this beautiful story.  The time period and setting--especially during the fall and winter months--is an excellent choice.  It reminds me of the story of Demeter and Persephone--when her daughter is taken to the underworld (the tunnel where Susie is taken, raped, and killed) Demeter, goddess of the Earth, causes winter to descend on the earth during her mourning.  When Persephone returns, Spring, Summer, and Fall resume.  Only in this case, Susis is gone forever.
