Erdrich's poetry and its symbolic method has some influence on Love Medicine. Thirteen of the stories appeared in magazines before the novel was published, although in altered form. As Faulkner discovered, stories need to have one form for magazines and still another form when assembled into an interconnected novel. Erdrich apparently reached a similar conclusion with Love Medicine.
