Louis Auchincloss (Critical Survey of Long Fiction)

While best known as a novelist, Louis Auchincloss became a prolific and successful writer
in a variety of other literary forms. Among his strongest collections of short fiction are The
Romantic Egoists (1954), Powers of Attorney (1963), and Tales of Manhattan
(1967), each of which presents stories linked by narration, characters, or theme in such a way as
to resemble a novel. An accomplished critic, Auchincloss published studies of a wide range of
