   The community, who still firmly believe in the necessity of this tradition, look down condescendingly on those who rebel against the ritual.  Old Man Warner, representing the general feel of at least the adults of the community, says this:

   Old Man Warner snorted. "Pack of crazy fools," he said. "Listening to the young folks, nothing`s good enough for them. Next thing you know, they`ll be wanting to go back to living in caves, nobody work any more, live hat way for a while. Used to be a saying about `Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.` First thing you know, we`d all be eating stewed chickweed and acorns.

   The reason we know that this is the general feel of the group is that there is little to no resistance.   The day is treated like any other, and the folks line up as if heading to the voting polls.  Only when she faces her own death does Tess Hutchinson complain.
