One of the major themes of this book is the journey from grief to healing. The death of Rocky's husband is such a traumatic event for her that she completely changes herself, her identity and her location to try and forget all about what has happened to her. The arrival of Lloyd, the labrador, with an arrow sticking into him is deeply symbolic, for both Lloyd and Rocky are wounded, yet through Rocky's search for Lloyd's owner and her relationship with Hill, we learn, as does Rocky, about how the most tremendous griefs can be healed and  how joy can surprise us when we least expect it.
