Why does the reader feel very close to Ralph through the novel "Lord of the Flies"?

Posted by soph17 on Monday April 13, 2009 at 10:46 AMAlthough Ralph has seemingly "perfect" physical qualities, and seems to have the directness and other qualities of a leader, the imperfections of Ralph are what the reader identifies with. He is the character at the end of the novel who shows the most humanity and is emotionally distraught that he could not be the successful leader he wanted/needed to be.
It is also due to the fact that he is the protagonist of the novel that the reader feels a closeness to Ralph. It is his character that we are most tied to emotionally throughout the novel.
